MG MGA - MGA Brakes

I have not been very happy with the brakes lately. When driving the car I feel quite nervous because of the not up to standard brakes. I am now considering upgrading the brakes by fitting a brake servo unit or doing a front disc conversion. Which of these is considered the most effective on the braking efficiency. I have already bought a remote servo booster, which I will install when it arrives from UK. I am not a believer of the disc conversion, thinking that such a conversion won't make much difference. Correct me if I'm wrong. Some advice on this will be greatly appreciated.

We put a booster on our roadster when we put a supercharger on our motor. I would say it is an effective upgrade. Bob

Thanks Bob. Would you be so good as to tell me the exact location where you installed the booster. A Pic will also help.

A friend up here who has experience of all 3 braking systems told me last year that all drums with a servo is probably best set up of all. His view was the feel of drums is best and fitting a servo gets over any lack of power. He hides his servos (he has 3 As) under the RH front wing. I have no personal experience.

I like my manual drum brakes, but then I'm old enough to remember when manual brakes were standard and power assist was a rare accessory (and could be irritating).

For lots of pictures and info on power booster installation, go here:

Start at article BT0200A and page through a dozen more articles with photos. I like the option to put the booster behind the splash panel inside the fender. This uses otherwise spare space, and does not clog up the engine bay (or under dash) for servicing work.

its placed under the dash. Braces going to the heater control panel

Fitting a servo won't improve your brakes, but you won't have to press the pedal quite as hard to achieve the same result.

If your brakes are not up to standard, you need to address that issue first.
