MG MGA - MGA starter motor bolt thread

Hi Folks. The upper starter motor bolt hole on my MGA bellhousing is partially stripped. I want to install a helicoil this spring. Can anyone tell me what size, and thread pitch this bolt hole is originally supposed to be? I think it is supposed to be threaded 5/16 UNF, but am not sure. Thanks! Glenn

Glenn, Sorry too cold outside to check.

Hi Mike. I know what you mean. Here in Ontario Canada, it's colder than a boss's heart!!!! Thanks anyway. Cheers! Glenn

Check your email. I assume the bolts would be the same for the roadster.

Here you are Glen, put your signature to this one.

The bolt on my starter motor has no thread
It is the type of problem I sometimes dread

A helicoil would seem to be the only thing
Yet another job to do this coming spring

Can anyone tell me the size I will need
Thread pitch as well to make it succeed

Until then quite sad all my tasks must wait
The car is snowed in until winter quite late

Back to my PC more poems to devise
One about a clutch and make it a size

Glenn wants to know the size of the thread
And so he asks the BBS for a lead

The question relates to the bolt which is upper
The problem is grave, it has spoilt his supper

My thoughts on this point have started to flower
Could it be that the thread is the same as the lower?

MY GOD! I have created a monster!!! lol Glenn.

Hi Art. (liked the poems!) The upper starter hole is "blind" In other words, this hole is deep and does not go right through the casting. (has to utilize a threaded hole) The lower starter hole goes right through the casting. My lower starter hole uses a long bolt which goes through the starter mounting flange, through the bellhousing, and then receives a nut on the far side of the bellhousing. Perhaps the lower starter hole was threaded originally, but it doesnt look like it has any threads now. So IF it was threaded at one time, I am without that reference now. Cheers! Glenn.

Hi Steve: Very funny poem! If I am king, does that make you prince????? lol Glenn

A starter-bolt haiku:

Bright shavings
cover bolt threads.
Oh sh*t.

I too have the same problem, with the bolt that is.
What is the thread and pitch?

thanks
Morten

Haiku 2:

Drill through hole.
Long bolt and nut
Works well.

Wonderful, John - mechanics in free-form. Here's my contribution, with the more traditional 5-7-5 timing:

In dark engine bay,
Gremlins laugh at human fools.
Starter falls to floor.

Alec--

On line during lunch
Three-four-two was wrong I see
This way works better.

Thanks Mr. Millmore! Glenn

Canada Glenn was a poet
To us he often would show it
Bombarded with verse
We often would curse
So we paid him back with our wit
