MG MGA - MGA VIN, I need the year of this car

I looked at a very dilapidated MGA today. It may come up for sale soon, and I might be interested. It is a pre-1960 car with a 1500cc engine and drum brakes. The guy who has it does not know what year it was built, and has no title to identify it. The title is really not a problem since KS law views it as an abandoned antique. Anyway, I loaned out my Original MGA book a while back, and have been unable to find the guy I loaned it to this evening.

Can someone please tell me a bit more about VIN HDA43/42785 ?

Black roadster made in late 1957. Chassis #45411 started in Jan 1958.

Are you saying that the body, which may have been black years ago, was made before the chassis? Seems odd, but anything is possible. I did not write down the body number. I wish now that I had.

I think he meant the first 1958 car was #45411.

H = MGA
D = 2 seater
A = Black
4 = North America
3 = Cellulose paint

Also I believe it could happen for the bodies to be made up to a few months before fitting to the chassis. I met someone a few years ago who was trying to match body numbers to dates. He thought my early '59 car had a late '58 body. I don't know how he could tell but he had gathered a lot of data in his notebook.
