MG MGA - Moss brake hose opinion

Time for new brake hoses on my 1600. Moss sells "regular" and "aftermarket" hoses. The aftermarkets are cheaper. Any experience/opinion on the relative value?

We had two days in a row without rain. After day 1, the lower radiator hose (Moss "aftermarket" sprung a leak . That makes three sets in five years so I'm a bit inclined against the cheapies. On the other hand, I'm Scotch-Irish heritage and hate to spend my whiskey money friviously ;-)

Thanks for the help.
Bill

PS- got three of four daily drivers hailed last week. Luckily the MGA and the only car built in this century were safe in the garage. I told the girls I'd fix their cars if they mowed the lawn this summer. So far no takers.

Splurge on the regular or optional steel braided lines. In the end, cheap brake parts could cost you much more then $$$.

Hi Bill. How is the Jag going?

I'd call them and ask if the good ones happen to be British made, and if so go with them. NOS Lockheed and Girling parts are hard to beat and one doesn't like to take chances with brakes.

I do not like the Teflon lined braided steel for the street - they can spring leaks if not maintained.

Bill,
I hope to finish the body this summer. Between kids, work, and other distractions, I'm going a bit slower than planned. Hear is an update page I'm working on:

http://home.comcast.net/~eastmanb1/Jag/Fall07_work/Far_Side_B-Pillar-a.htm

Some of the "distractions" have been eliminated-
Both daughters now out of high school

Reduced "maintenanc hog" cars from five to three

Had a little "suspension work" done myself- left knee replacement 27 March (picture attached) Hopefully I can get the Jag done before the right one goes ;-)

BTW- I ordered a set of braided hoses last week. Figured I should try them once at least.

Regards,
Bill

Oops- I meant ordered braided lines last night. If I'd done it last week, this conversation is a bit disingenuous from my end, eh?

Re: Bill Spohn's comment about maintaining braided stainless lines. What kind of maintenance do you mean, Bill?

The Teflon inner tubing on the stainless braided hoses rubs slightly on the outer braiding as the suspension goes up and down, and for that matter as the wheel turns back and forth.

That small rubbing motion can be enough, given sufficient time, to wear through the inner plastic tube. I once had an Aeroquip line spring a small leak as the inner tube punctured. Fortunately it did it while I was bleeding it before the race, instead of as I was trying to haul it down from 130 mph into a hairpin turn (I have no desire to see just how well rear brakes only work in that situation).

Racers change the lines every couple of seasons so it normally isn't a problem, but given the normal street driver's maintenance cycle - ignore it until it breaks and then complain bitterly - such a failure on the street, especially on a car without a dual master could definitely ruin your day.

Yes, these lines do give a harder pedal as the outer sheath expands less than a conventional hose, but most of these hoses are bought because the owners want to be 'racy', when they really don't need them for street use.

I grant you that the risk is fairly small, but we learn in racing that winning = eliminating ANY possible causes of failure (usually one by one over a prolonged period....)

Braided Stainless steel brake hoses with Teflon liners are good or better then standard hoses, but you do have to be cautious or any rubbing you can wear a hole right through the stainless braiding. If you can keep them free from any contact they should last longer than standard hoses.

I used the braided stainless steal brake hoses on my MGA roadster and it gives me great braking. I wouldn't use anything else.
