MG MGA - Moss or Scarborough Faire?

I'm just starting to restore my 58 coupe and I have compared some prices in both catalogs, I realize some may be after market in one and oem in the other but in general it seems like S.F. prices are lower overall, but is the quality as good......Just curious as to the experiences of those of u who have purchased products from both, and hoping to find out which might be best ovarall value...thanks,
Mike

Scarborough faire has good quality products and interior sets, but you need to make sure you order exactly what you need .Moss will take returns much easier. If in question on a product, call SF and talk to Cecelia as she knows the car forwards and backwards.

You can get some discount on Moss parts through the Moss distributors like LBCarCo. If you are price shopping you should start by comparing these discounted Moss parts prices with the SF prices.

You might also seriously consider customer service policies, or lack thereof in some cases. Try asking about warranty period and getting your money back if you're not satisfied for any reason. You may be surprised at the differences.

There is not enough space in this forum to expound completely on all of the implications, and I generally don't like bashing the suppliers in public. But if you would like to drop me a private message I might send along a bit more about my experiences and opinions.

I would agree with Barney, i just completed the restauration of a 1960 coupe, i used both suppliers you indicated, i did my interior twice since the quality of the first one was way below my expectations. For the same price or even a little higher always look for quality, customer service policies instead of all the other blablabla.

For mechanical parts both suppliers are similar depending on the spécific parts,

If are looking for other parts please be specific i might have some spares for you.

Cheers,

Salut/Hi Jean Marc. Where are you in Montreal? I'm in Lachute at the moment. Might take some parts off your hands, if the price is right.

Thanks everyone, these r exactly the type of answers I was looking for, I'm not into bashing either, just like to make a wise choice and get a quality product...Jean, now I'm curious, which was a better interior, I'll be needing that too....u can email me if that is easier....here is an example...moss 1500 piston set 299.00, SF 200.00..the 50's and 100's can add up over the course of the restoration... thanks again,

When I did my 60 Coupe, I ordered Moss interior panels and found that at that time they did not have the map pockets on the front kick panels. I sent it back and got the kit from SF. Ditto the same with the headliner kit,the SF headliner was much better. Have a good day!

I see it this way. We're very fortunate to have such a wealth of suppliers & re-sellers. I've tried to spread my purchases among all after doing research on quality and other issues. The loss of any supplier will mean less competition in the market place and inevitably higher pricing to all including squeezing the re-seller discounts. I've had quality, pricing, back-order and broken promise issues with all. Some more so than others, so as in all buyer - seller transactions.... Caveat Emptor.

SF prices are generally lower. I have had part quality issues with both SF and Moss but more with SF. On the other Cecelia is knowledgeable, can be very helpful beyond selling you parts, is willing to negotiate on things, and tends to ship faster.

I've used both LBCarco (Jeff Zorn) and SF (Cecilia Bruce) and have nothing but good things to say about both firms/people. As with anything, the quality of parts is sometimes (but relatively rarely) uneven, but both are willing to replace. Jeff is available only via email, but Cecilia takes calls (she talked my wife through the installation of our Moss seat covers!).

I used SF and Moss(distributors) during the restoration of my A. My experiences were generally good on both suppliers. I even had mis-ordered a set of brake lines from SF and didn't realize the mistake until a year later when I went to put it in the car. I had no problem returning it and getting the right part.

On the interior stuff, seat covers, carpeting etc, get samples of the matrials from both vendors and make your decisions based on that. They offer different interpretations of "OEM" colors and SF has more options. Choose what you think is best for yourself.

Jeff Zorn offers the all of the Moss products at a discount and other bits not available elsewhere. And is present at many of the Midwest meets and shows. I don't think he ends up at the California ones though.

I have done very little purchasing in the last 5 years since the resto was completed so things may have changed a bit since then.

Mike,
I'm in process of completing a frame off on a 58 coupe and have purchased $$$$ in parts from both. Both have their strong points. I'll send you an e-mail.
