MG MGA - Muffler So Close To Fuel Tank
Hello, I bought an MGA Coupe a little over a year ago, and I haven't much looked at it, let alone worked on it yet. I recently saw a 1962 MGA MkII Coupe (mine is a 1957 1500) on U.S. Ebay - Item number: 4534620767 - I noticed something quite odd on the photos (if you scroll all the way down)- that the muffler is that close to the fuel tank. Is there any heat barrier that goes in between them? - I mean - that really is pretty close if you think about it. I wonder if any unfortunate tragedies occured because of this? Thanks guys - and I'm keeping my car regardless - took a long time to save up to get a restorer even though it'll be sitting in my garage for awhile. PS - The car on Ebay looks very nice - lots of work & time involved - and money! Thanks again, Anthony

Anthony, I've driven MGA's for 40 years. To my knowledge there has never been a problem caused by the close proximity of the muffler to the fuel tank. Regards, G. Foster

I noticed the same thing on my Dad's A. He rotated the muffler to get the turn down pointing the way he wanted and it moved the muffler to almost touching the tank!! I have mine set as far away as I can get it and in 10+ years, no problems with heat. I believe that there was no heat shield installed at the factory either. Dennis, Az

What do you think is going to happen back there? The fuel isn't going to boil or sponateously combust as there is no spark or flame to ignite the fuel. The fuel is sloshing around in the tank and would only rise a couple of degrees on a long run or even standing. Unless your exhaust is able to touch the tank and gradually weaken the tank structure, don't worry about it and enjoy the ride.
