MG MGA - My Coupe' as it looks now

Hi all , I expect some of you remember how disappointed I was with the car when it first arrived thought you would like to see it now after hours spent getting doors, bonnet and bumpers to fit better, also I think most of the chrome is original, grill , bumpers etc.

any comments, or critisms welcome

Looks like your hard work is paying off Gordon. Looks good!
Jerry Murphy

Gordon it looks great I like the red & grey combination. Thought for a moment you had a twin cam with that bonet.

That really is first-rate, Gordon! It's taken a great leap forward over the summer. (If I rightly recall, it originally looked much more like a Sprite, no?) I'd like to have seen how you've sorted out your tool kit(s), about which I've heard much. Do you rotate them into the duty roster?

Hi Cliff, the bonnet suits the MGA and helps with overheating perhaps they should have done that from new, Hi Ken paintwork is still like crazy paving but doesn't show in photo's I'm calling it patina lol, tool kits are on alert one, two, three and four lol

this is alert one

before pic, doesn't look too bad, nothing fitted well but it was a lot better and very original than it first appeared, never been fully restored last work, which was sills, some wing repairs and the paint job!!! was done in 1980-82

g c pugh

Gordon what did you do to the wings to improve the gaps?

Was it just a case of loosening the bolts and moving the wings or something more drastic.

Regards...John
J Bray

Good effort Gordon.

Details please on your car jack, looks like a King Dick?

You mention overheating, and I also see the electric fan. May be just the camera angle, but are your grill slats open enough? I am in Dominic zone with my 1800 engine. It is running at a solid 160. Will not go higher, no matter how hard or fast or slow I drive. No electric fans or other fancy gizmos. All I did was change a 12 year old (in the car)Smiths 72 degree sleeved thermostat for a 3 ordinary 72 degree stat and the temperature came down from 185. The Smiths stat was engraved 1974, so I am suspicious that it was passed its useful life, even though it appeared to open at 72 degrees. I wonder what it did when the system got up to pressure? What is the temperature situation with your engine?

It would be interesting to tie some light threads to the louvres to monitor airflow. The air gets quite turbulent towards the back of the bonnet adjacent to the oval air intakes and I was wondering about their effectiveness: http://rutgerbooy.nl/MGA_specials_page_2.htm

Nice rocker cover and cap! Should the bolts not be painted red?

Seriously though, the car looks fantastic!
Neil McGurk

Hi all, John most of the adjustment was done on the door hinges a lot of trial and error and some new old hinges with less play in them, it's made a big improvement to the look of the car, also mananged to secure the bottom of the nearside front wing to the inner part which pulled the whole of the back of the wing into shape,

Steve it is a "new King Dick " from Moss a couple of years ago it is quite good, the car doesn't appear to overheat stays at 120 to 140 the fan was already on the car but never heard it come on during normal driving, don't know about the louvers they look cool though lol

hi Neil trust you to be picky lol

Hi Gordon, your car looks just great...I had an MG A 1600 roadster back in the 60's...loved that car.
Ronald Begg

Hi Ron thanks for that , paintwork looks like the surface of Mars close up

Gordon, I lifted this image from an Aussie MGCC, hope the car's owner won't mind. It's such a nice coupe.

Ronald Begg

HI Ron I wish mine looked that good

Gordon

Gents,
That Oz Coupe in Ron's post is definitely not a trailer queen - that photo was taken at the recent club grass motorkhana (and it rained on the day also)! Owner is the MGA Competition winner for the last two years and is in an unbeatable position this year to take the championship again.

Talking about Coupes, here's one I prepared earlier, this is what MG should have made. First sprint meeting at Colerne

Terry Drinkwater

Hi Terry is that one of yours, whats under the lid

Gordon

Nice coupe!
It's not such a bad thing having a "stand-off" paint job. At least you don't worry so much about having a bit of fun with the car!

Cheers,
