MG MGA - MYL vs. MT-90 synthetic transmission oils

I would like to know who is using these synthetic oils and how they are performing for you. I've read through the archives and see that several peaple are using these oils and was wondering if they are still using them and how they are holding up. I've read some conflicting reveiws from people using them on newer transmissions ei: honda, toyota ect. some love it while others say they had problems with sycro wear.
I have ND 30wt. in mine now but have some grinding when downshifting into 2nd when not totally warmed up.( syncros are new ) should I use 5w - 30 ?
any info is appieciated
thanks joe

Joe,

Its Redline MTL not MYL. MTL is for transmissions like our MGA's that require a 30wt oil. MT-90 is not the best product to use in our MGA transmissions. I've used MTL for three years and the shifts are extremely smooth. When pouring MTL out of the container it looks like and has the viscosity of Dextron fluid. One of he current MGA magazine "tech tips" articles suggests frequent 6000mi. transmission oil changes. I believe this is good advice. If you've had a transmission rebuild recently this oil change to MTL will be a good way to flush out any metal paticles that are a result of the rebuild. -M.S.

Joe, I agree with Martin here. MTL is a good product and I have used it exclusively in my A for the last 3 years. I had a similar problem to what you describe upon shifts into 2nd when the car was not up to operating temps.
The change to MTL completely eliminated the the grinds.

Check out Red Lines web site at redlineoil.com, they have some good info on their product data sheets under the heading gear oils.
It is a little pricey and I got some sticker shock from the first purchase, but I would use nothing else now.

I also concur with Martin regarding the use of Redline MTL in non-synchronized first gear gearboxes. Since changing over shifting is much smoother. I always thought that the MGA had one of the best gearboxes for British cars, but now it's buttery smooth. The huge difference came when I added to the gearbox in my Jaguar E-Type. It is an early Series I so it has the Moss box. Prior to adding MTL-downshifting from third to second was dificult at best without precise double clutching. The MGA gearbox is still much better than the E-Type.

Thanks all, I'm going to give it a try this weekend, does it blend with any oil that doesn't drain out ?

how often do you have to change the MTL - I only drive about 2500 miles a year, do you think it will be ok to change every 3 years or so?
thanks
