MG MGA - Negative Ground Advantage
After much deliberation I'm going to change my car's polarity to negative ground. Originally I installed a vintage-correct Blaupunkt Frankfurt in the MGA but you can't really hear it over 40mph, and I figure a bigger amp will overpower the engine and road noise. My old MGB and Mercedes SL both had 40-watt Alpine amps but they were not loud enough with the top down, so I figure 100w is a safe bet? Questions to other members here: what size speakers do you use; has anyone mounted a subwoofer and where; has anyone tried mounting an amplifier in the hidden compartment behind the footwell kick-panel (wondering about heat buildup)? I figure as long as I don't cut any sheet metal and don't do any "permanent" modfications I'll be ok. Thoughts/comments welcome...

Jim I have a pair of 50 watt speakers under the dash, one each side. More than loud enough hood down at 70 mph, ear plugs in and amongst heavy traffic on our motor ways. I am negative earth and am using a very ordinary 70s period Motorola FM/AM radio. Steve

If you use isolated ground components, you don't have to go through the bother of changing polarity. I use a 50W graphic equilizer with two speakers under the dash mounted on the rods that hold the bottom of the dash, and two speakers attached to the spare tire cover carpet with velcro. No problems, and still positive ground. Dennis, Az
