MG MGA - NewMuffler
I am getting a new muffler for my '60 A. Is a stainless steel worth the difference (its a driver in Alabama)? Also, what about the free flowing muffler? Is it that much better and will it easily attach to a regular system? THanks. Jack |

The only advantage to a Stainless system is longevity. If you don't drive your car frequently, the standard systems seem to rust out. Especially if you don't drive it long enough to completly dry the muffler out. If you drive it often, the muffler should last a long time. |

My last SS muffler lasted 13 years, and was replaced under warranty when the baffles went. It's not much more expensive first time around, and if it's then the only one you have to buy, it's a no-brainer. I don't see a mild steel exhaust lasting 19 years! |

I purchased an Abarth muffler system the first year I owned my MGA. That was in 1976. The supplier was a Long Island, New York MG parts and spares dealer. I don't remember the name of the place now, although it is possible I have the original receipt in file. I am still using the same muffler...nearly 30 years later. Total miles on the engine since I have owned it? I estimate about 33,000 miles. Don't ask me how or why it has lasted this long but it still has the same throaty warble as when I first installed it. It is a California car and always garaged. The only thing that seems to change the timbre of the exhaust is the oil level in the carburetor dash pots! I don't think the muffler was a stainless...just a darn good steel muffler! If I ever have to replace it I can only hope to fit the car with one as good as this one is. Steve |
