MG MGA - Oil drain plug Tranny

Anyone out there have the size and threading of the tranny oil plug? Mine got all messed up, and Moss sent a gas pipe male plug at a dollor to the penny price, I know they know better than that.

Jim,
It appears to be about a 1/2" tapered pipe plug with 14 TPI on my 1600 tranny. Hope this helps and have a good day!

I don't think the original plug was tapered, or else it wouldn't need a copper sealing ring. I guess tapered would work though, as long as it seals and you don't overtighten.

According to the Service Parts List, the gearbox drain plug was their p/n 6K199 and then changed to 2K5380. They say the change point is "Com (E) GD101
I have no clue what that change point refers to..or when--anybody got a guess?

gil,

the statement "Com (E) GD101" means that engine (E) no 15GD101 was the first to use the changed part.

As this is for a 1500, the 15 prefix is implicit, and the other letters are U, H etc do not matter as they are merely informative.

Dan, Ahhh-- I see, thank you- makes sense.
So, since the Clausager book says "In January 1959, the MGA 1500 was fitted with the revised engine type 15GD-U-H, from car/chassis 61504" any car after that would have the different drain plug.
Please don't tell the scrutineers at the Concours !!!
Incidentally, I looked up what he had to say about that change- It is when they went to the high starter position- and lo and behold there is, among other things, a statement about the starter cover which I never knew- "Gearbox cover with rubber cover for Bendix spring, right-hand toeboard and carpet modified to suit"
Thanks again

That statement is a little misleading, or at least vague. The "Gearbox cover with rubber cover for Bendix spring...." is refering to the sheet metal tunnel which was then endowed with a big bulge high on the right side to clear the starter drive end.

Also that "rubber cover" is a rubber scuff pad (in the passenger compartment) which is contoured to fit over the bump in the tunnel. On right hand drive cars the headlight dipper switch was mounted very near to that position, so operating the kick switch would scuff the high starter bump on the tunnel.

I do not know what was the change to the drain plug, maybe anti-corrosion finish or shape of the square hole. But in any case the thread size did not change, still a tapered pipe thread, so the early or late drain plugs are interchangeable.

"...shape of the square hole."

Well...no wonder they leak...LOL

I was talking to a guy today that has been working on MG's for about 40 years-- he says he seems to remember seeing some old plugs that had straight sides and then they were all tapered sides, so Barney was, as usual, right on track. ( maybe the tapered makes it easier to not get the drive stuck??? )

Jim:

Did any of the above help you out??

The plug shipped from Moss should have been a 2K5830 tapered pipe plug which although may look like a Ace hardware plumbing bit, is an honest to gosh, made specifically for the MGA/MGB/AHY/Sprite line of cars by a manufacturer in the UK.

If the plug does not fit, or looks like it may be the wrong bit, please let me know ASAP. There could be a mixup with stock. More likely the threads on your transmission may have been damaged in the past and re-tapped to a different thread.

let me know how it turns out tho'

Kelvin.

Boy did I get an answer! Moss was correct, sure not the first I've been wrong. Thanks Kelvin, and all the rest of you that have showen me the error of my ways.
Now I will have to check and see what my car came with.

Thanks to all
