MG MGA - Oil leaking from driver side rear hub

I'm finally getting my '62 MGA MkII reliable. I was on the highway going 80 with no problems. I got the car home and I have an oil leak from the driver side rear hub. I'm 99% sure it's not brake fluid since it smells like oil not DOT4 and when I had someone press the brakes, it didn't affect the leak. Here's a picture:

The thing is, I looked at Moss' website and can't figure out which parts I should order to fix the leak. DO I jsut need a cap for where it's leaking? Also, should I replace the washer, or is this important?

Thanks,

Darian

Darian, there should be a gasket and an "O" ring fitted between the flange on the end of the axle and the hub. The washer you point out is a lock tab that is supposed to keep the large nut from comming loose.
gasket part No. 296-100 "O" ring part No. 121-400 and lock tab washer is part No. 267-450. You should not have to replace the washer, just bend a portion of it up against one of the flats on the large nut.

Thanks, much appreciated. Looks like it's going to be a pretty easy job.

Just a thought, but do you think I need to order a new oil seal (Moss # 120-900) as well, or should the O-ring do the trick?

Thanks,

It all depends on where it is leaking. The O-ring and paper gasket are to seal the front where the flange on the axle bolts to the hub. The oil seal is for the rotating surface between the hub and the axle housing. A bad oil seal would let oil leak out behind the hub. To replace the oil seal, you need a special wrench to remove the octagonal nut. You can use a socket for certain Ford 4X4's, so check Barney Gaylords site for details.

Check your manual and car number as I believe the O ring is used on later MGA's. I do not remember when the change occured. You may not have an "O" ring on your car.

Jeff, Darian has a Mk2, I believe the change was early on the 1500. There should definitely be O rings.
Neil McGurk

There is an O-ring on my car. It was in two pieces once I found it, so that explains the oil leak...

Thanks everyone.
