MG MGA - par for the course

Coils are not the only componants failing. From the trade in general, engines , transmissions etc., are falling by the wayside in all modern cars. Eg., our new Mercedes has been off the road for two weeks having the rear main seal replaced ( gear box out) ,and the stater neutral switch assambly replaced. No parts in Australia ,all ex Germany ! VW and Audi CVTs no servicable parts, a new transmission for $25,000 ! They are now all the same, designed by the cost accountant. No wonder their value drops like a stone when the warranty expires.
I'll stick to my reliable A. But Ido carry the origonal distributor as a spare to back up the Moss electronic unit. Sean

No Mike it is not a typo. Two years ago I attended Trade Night introducing a new model Audi with a CVT -(Automatic Transmission ) What parts are servisable I asked. The drive chain, bearings, pullies, valve body ? No, none of these, just a pan gasket and a filter. Oh, Audi has an exchange transmission available ? No , a new unit is available at
$25 thousand Australian Dollars ! They are all the same today, we have reduced the number of parts in our cars by 20% they proudly claim. Yes ,they obtain from their suppliers a fuel tank complete with the pump,the filter ,the gauge sender unit , connectors etc., that is one part ! Try buying a bare tank from Ford, it's plastic and complete. $ $ $ Motor cars today are, as once decribed ,white goods on wheels. Throw away items. All produced to be recycled. So your shinny new Jaguar may be a reincarnation of Toyotas, Bmws,oil drums and what ever. Sean

But this is typical of manufacturers today. As an example, which more closely relates to our MG's, I have a Delphi/Lockheed servo unit purchased from Moss, and I have this located behind the RH splash panel. Obviously there is a fair bit of dust there, so I have endeavoured to obtain an extra part (mentioned in the installation instructions) that allows the servo breather to extra air from elsewhere in the car by way of a hose connected to it. I emailed Delphi, who didn't even know the part existed..they told me to try AP Caparo, who apparently make a lot of their brake assemblies..they confirmed they make this part, and they send it to Delphi! Anyway, after 20 emails I was getting nowhere, and a kind lady at Caparo suggested I contact a Company called Seltech, who buy parts from Caparo and Delphi. The result was that Seltech were brilliant, and managed to get one of the filters (breather), but they are not available as a single item..apparently they are manufactured for a servo unit, but once again, Delphi doesn't know what for, even though it's one of their products!!!

God help us in the future.

CVTs are not yet developed enough for me to buy. They fail too soon. The heavier the car or the stronger the engine the sooner they fail.
More than 80% of the cars I see make 300,000 miles are Toyotas. I find German cars over priced, over engineered, and unreliable.
What kills the price of expensive cars is their secondary market.
Most people with enough money to support the high end market won't buy old cars.
The used market for 10 year old luxury cars is poor people that want the bling. These people would rather spend money on flashy wheels than maintenance. Mr Rivera brought in his 02 Lexus SC 430 in for headlights. To replace the 2 HID bulbs cost him $400. He declined the replacement of the radiator. There was over a 1/2 inch of coolant crust all around both the upper and lower tanks. He said "I just add coolant its ok" It has been leaking for 2 years. This car will burn up the engine for lack of care.
Some parts are designed to fail.
Isuzu Troopers had a GM transmission that had no dipstick or fill tube. To check and fill the transmission the truck had to be on a hoist. With it hot idling in park you would pull a fill plug in the pan and pump fluid up into it until it ran out. It had a "lifetime" fluid recommendation. When the fluid's life was over it kills the trans.
