MG MGA - Petrol cap
I have noticed a very slight smell of fuel, near my petrol cap. Not too bad really, but best to deal with it. I am guessing the cork gasket has been flattened a bit over the years.
I was wondering if I might get a better seal if I replaced the existing cork with a rubber O ring rather than a new cork gasket. Just wondering if anyone has done similar - if my measurements are correct it needs to be 45mm inner diameter, and 50 mm outer diameter. A flat rubber washer might be better I guess, but cant source one, I can only find O rings |

Graham, How about using pond liner material, or similar material; perhaps two layers bonded together. You can make your own gasket then. Regards Colin |

Thanks Colin I was now thinking along similar lines, I found an old rubber seal from a waste pipe which is about the right diameter. I will try and cut it neatly to make it a bit thinner, and then after giving it a bath in hot water, will see if it will do the job. |

years ago I had the same issue. I wrapped the opening part of the fuel cap in cling film, wiped it with aching-up detergent and filled the space for the rubber / cork seal with a bead of black silicon sealer, closed the cap on the car and left to for a few days to cure. I then opened the cap, removed the cling film (the detergent acted as a release agent) and ended up with a perfect seal that lasted 20 years or more. |

Thanks Dominic - that sounds like a perfect solution. The only problem is my lack of confidence in doing the job properly. I fear that with my clumsiness I would end up, either during or sometime afer the job, with something clogging up my fuel pump or carbs that shouldnt be there! My waste washer is to fat so I will try and find some other suitable material as Colin has suggested. |
