MG MGA - Plastic fan fitment

Summer got an early start here in the northwest US. Record high temps and no rain. All that more reason to work on keeping the engine temps down.

Does anyone know if the new Moss plastic fan (434-332) will fit inside the plastic fan shroud (459-645)? I have the same question into Moss but have not heard back.

Cheers,
John

I don't have a a plastic fan shroud, so not sure about your question.

I do have a two-piece steel fan shroud installed in 1997. I recently installed the Moss plastic fan in my MGA. The plastic fan is slightly larger diameter than the original metal one. I had to trim at least 1/8-incb from one side of my metal fan shroud to give it required clearance. That was when I discovered that the Moss plastic fan for MGA is not a special part, but is the same part number used for MGB.

Better to fix the problem than to put band aids on,do you have an original radiator or has it been replaced.

Gary,

Actually I am not having much of an overheating problem. Under most conditions I am running at 190F. Even with our extra hot weather I have yet to get much over 212F. Yes, I am running a recorded radiator. I have done all of the usual fixes with the exception of installing an original cell core radiator.

The long term durability of the original metal fan is of greater concern. In the balance I figure that throwing a fan blade could be harder to fix than a boil-over. If the plastic fan can help with cooling, so much the better.

John,
you could easily trim the outer ends of the blades on a plastic fan to make it fit into the radiator shroud if it proved necessary.

The NTG fan that I used for a few years has square ends and would be the easiest to trim accurately to keep it running in balance.
It should however also be relatively easy to trim either the Moss 6 blade or 7 blade fans.

For your information, when I fitted the NTG plastic
fan it reduced my engines running temperature by 10 degrees F.
But it created a lot of noise at higher revs in doing so, it made my MGA sound more like a London double-decker bus than I really liked.

Good point John,I did not consider that

I received a reply from Jason at Moss regarding the new plastic fan, "Plastic fan part number 434-332 fan blades will hit the radiator shroud. You will have to remove some material from the fan shroud so the fan will clear shroud."
