MG MGA - Pulling Main Bearing Caps

How do you pull the main bearing caps? There are threaded female openings....I assume those have something to do with it.

thanks
T McCarthy

Do you have a Workshop Manual?
I would not start on an engine rebuild without a proper Manual. I have attached a scan of the main bearing removal tool which is shown in the Manual.
You will have to improvise your own tool.

If you don't have a workshop manual, you will find the relevant section here

My slide hammer has the same thread as the holes in the caps.
Thread in...tap, tap, tap...They're off!

Tyson,
Get a 5" to 6" x 1/2" N/F bolt with a good sized washer. Screw it into the hole in the cap.
Take a 5/8" open ended wrench put it under the washer and tap upwards, with a light hammer.

No more problem.

When putting back the new bearings & caps, aline them squarely with the block and lightly tap them back down using a light hammer & brass drift.

Hope this works for you. Rod.

Dohhhhhhhhh (forehead slap)

Of course the shop manual!

I'm afraid I've fallen into a dreadful habit of inquiring here before I go the shop manual.

Thanks all, I'll try to stop there first.

Hello Tyson.......I have a slide hammer and have pulled a few out. If you need help let me know and I can come by with the puller and give you a hand. I actually live in Williamston about 30min from you.

Wow thanks Tom that's very kind. Actually the machinist who is doing the machinist type work on my rebuild already pulled them.

I'm good to go. All I have left to do is spec the cylinder boring and decide if I need a the crank journal's ground out and I'm off to the races.
