MG MGA - Pushrods don't drop into position

A problem..I have finished the head recondition and started reassembley. I put the head back on but some of the pushrods don't drop into position to allow the rocker arm to drop into place. Any suggestions ????

A second thought..off with the tappet covers..?
Neil Ferguson

Are the tappets resting on the area above the tappet bore in the block casting?

Mick..Thanks for post and bottomed the problem. Meant to refer to cam follower covers in last post. I took the two covers off and most of the cam followers had popped up out of their guides and were on their sides behind the covers. Put them back in and then all fitted ...
Really surprised ..the cam followers must have stuck to the pushrods when i lifted the latter out ...
But relieved !!!
Name issue? ..is it cam follower or tappet?
Neil Ferguson

Neil,

In OZ they are tappets. In the USA they are cam followers. I believe they are tappets for the Brits?
Complicated as we say we are setting the tappet clearances when we do the settings at the rocker arms.
However this is correct because we are really setting the tappet running clearance on the camshaft lobe.

Looking at my British 'Practical Motor engineering Illustrated' book from the 40s we too call them tappets.

The MG Factory calls them tappets.

Hi

Probably as everone knows when you lift the pushrods give them a shake to release the followers, they are often stuck with oil in the hollow.
