MG MGA - Rear Brakes Lock
My rear brakes sometimes lock when I leave my 61' MGA sitting in the garage for a week or two. Is this a symptom of age or rust or something more serious?

R.B. Do both sides lock up?

Do you leave the hand brake on, this will generally trap moisture between the shoes and the drum thus causing corrosion.

Check the hydralic cyliner in each brake at the rear. I have had corrsion which caused the brakes not to work and I had to rebuild them. I finnaly went to silicon fluid and had no more problems

I always leave mine with the hand brake off with no problems. Also check the flexible brake lines. These can perish inside and block the fluid trying to return. When you press on the footbrake this applies high pressure and the brakes will function OK, but the light return spring pressure may not be able to return the fluid to release the shoes. Pete

Never put the parking brake on in the garage. Unless your garage is on a slope, it should never be required. This will probably solve the problem.
