MG MGA - Rear Bumper Fog/Reversing Light Brackets

I thought you may be interested in the rear fog/reversing light brackets I am installing on my car. I have used the standard MGA front brackets. I found the easiest way to fit them was to cut off the right angle bracket. To do the job properly I now need to get them re-chromed - not high on the list at the moment.

There is no top bumper bolt inside the over-riders and, in any case, with the brackets swapped over and the top right angle brackets facing to the rear inside the over-riders there was interference with the overall fit.

Not a new idea. I pinched it from the black Twin Cam (now Sold) at Cam Cunningham's East Lancs MGOC Club meeting - thanks for the invite to come along back in 2009.

Steve,
If you turned them upside down would they fit (without trimming)? You could also have them on the outside of the over-rider with the lights protected by the lower section of the over-rider.

I will play around with them this afternoon and come back to you.

It looks to me that they would still need to be trimmed even when placed upside down. The angle bracket would either foul the body work if pointing forward or the overrider if facing backward.

Unlike the front bumper attachment where the studs are central with the overrider, the rear studs are almost in line with the outside edge of the overriders, hence the interference. It may just be possible by over-drilling the bracket hole and easing the bracket towards the car centre line that the right angle part of the bracket will fit inside the overrider. It's a bit late for me to try that option.

The problem with mounting the bracket up side down is on the left hand side. If the bracket is mounted with the curve inwards the light will foul the exhaust pipe. With the curve outwards it will put the light nicely in line with the inside edge of the wheel, picking up spray and dirt.

This is what they look like with the brackets curved inwards. They could be swapped over so that the lights are moved out closer to the rear light clusters.

Steve,
I'm planning on using a single L494 suspended underneath the bumper, centrally located. I'll have to make up a bracket to mix in with the plate mounting system. Plusses for me seem to be easy wiring through the existing grommet, which should be completely hidden- where is your wiring going to run? The L494 is pretty darn big so I don't know if the extra light will do much more than provide landing lights for any local alien invasion. I'm also thinking that I may be able to sneak in an extra red LED brake array to act a third Brake light, that may be a bulb to far though.

I am planning on using the lights to blind the 4X4s that insist on sitting behind me on full beam!

You are right about the wiring. Mine goes down through the unused hole in the bracket and then along behind the bumper to the central wiring hole. The left hand light may be changed to a red lense and become a fog light, otherwise it will be a second reversing light. Currently it is not wired up.

Where are you planning on placing the 3rd brake light? A number of us have them high up behind the seats. This is my arrangement: http://www.mgaroadster.co.uk/Third_Brake_Light.htm

Steve, There is so much space inside the L494 I was thinking of putting it there. I know 3rd lights should be high but I was just wanting to throw more red light backwards. Haven't researched where to get the LEDS but if it fits in the 1500 rear light body it should go inside the L494.

Thanks Steve. It looks interesting. The advantage of moving them outside the over riders would be a better spread of light to the sides where you need it.
