MG MGA - Removing wipers

What is the secret to removing the wiper drives from the body? I have removed the retaining nuts and the pieces behind, but there is interference under the dash from the mounting brackets for the dash vents. These brackets are welded in place. Do I have to undo the cable at each drive? Also, how do you release the cable drive at the motor end? I have undone the cap nut but can't see any further.

Art,

When I removed mine I took out the wiper motor and cable together. The dash vent had already been removed. At this point the tube the drive cable runs through along with the wiper drives lifted right out.

It was the last thing I did when taking the car apart before removing the body and the first thing I did when putting it back together.

I got it at last. Bit of flexing the dash metal, then having to unscrew the drive gearbox to release the cable. Very messy job and almost impossible to do if it fails on the road! You are right it has to be the first thing installed after the resto.

When you re-install the gear boxes for the whipers make sure that they both have the same orinetation as related to the tube/cable. If you get it wrong, then one whiper will be going one way and the other will go the other way. ot very effective. It is possible to correct this by losening the nuts that hold teh tubes to the whiper boxes and removing the nuts that holdthe shiper boxes to the cowl, then rotate the whiper boxes and reinstall teh tubes. A messey job that is no fun when thecar is assembeled, howeverit can be done.

I have ben there and done that and wished I had payed more attention when I took it apart.

Jim, I have not disturbed the individual wiper shaft connections to the cable - they came out together. I won't dismantle them either if the operational check is OK.
