MG MGA - Rev counter

I have replaced the cable as suggetsted in previous posts, but with no success, the needle still stops at 500 when the engine is switched off, so I now intend to dismantle the rev counter to clean it etc.
I thought I had read that Barney's sight has guidelines, but I can't find them. Anyone know where they are?
Thanks.

The rev counter is just like the speedo, except without an odometer. Here is Barney's page about disassembling the speedo, but the rev counter is much easier because it doesn't have the odometer reset shaft. http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/dash/st200.htm

Here is another good page about the internals of the speedometer. Again, the rev counter is the same, just simpler without the odometer.

OK. so I've removed the tacho 'from the car. The front bezel will not twist off. I have soaked it for days in WD40, but with no sucsess. I don't want to put it in a vice as I think it will distort the bezel. Any ieas?

I have had the same problem with my spare tacho for months. However, your problem spurred me on and I have just spent half an hour in the garage and managed to release it by very very gently easing the tabs slightly with a small flat screwdriver, just enough to relieve some of the pressure. Suddenly the bezel twisted. No damage either!

I didn't have trouble with mine, but I normally use a rubber strap wrench on stuff like that to avoid scratches or other damage. This is the type wrench I am talking about. http://www2.northerntool.com/product-1/200306401.htm

Nigel,

If the bezel is completely stuck, most likely the rubbers are perished. You can get a bezel and glass kit that comes with new rubbers and new knurl nuts.

If you paint/plate the body and paint the interior bezel (white underneath to reflect light on the face, matt black on top) and clean the face and needle when you have the tacho apart, it will be like new!

I had my tach apart recently to spray the inside of the case white. Had to do as Steve suggested to get the front bezel off, but the difference in readablility at night is nothing short of remarkable.

Nigel -

Also try placing the tach (rev counter) face down on a flat rubber surface (bezel down) and push down while twisting the body of the tach. Some old innertube rubber should work.
