MG MGA - Romance Rekindled
Sunday was a beautiful day in southeastern PA, my household chore list was under control, and my wife and kids were all away doing other things so I headed for the garage. I been fooling around with a rather ratty 68 B for the past year or so and my first thought was to drop the B's top and take it out for a drive. But sitting under cover behind the B, was my 57 A. I haven't driven the A very much lately, as the B has demanded alot more attention, and now she seemed to be calling my name. So I pulled the B out of the way and uncovered the A. It's funny how the mind works. The A was repainted and reupholstered last summer and having done most of the work myself I have a mental note of every dirt spot, sanding mark and ripple in the new paint. But somehow 5 months under cover had caused my memory of those flaws to grow way out of proportion because when I pulled back the cover I was surprised at how pretty she was. I couldn't resist running my hand over her fender and telling her how nice she looked. A quick check under the hood assured me that all the vital fuilds were OK. I climbed into the drivers seat and just sat there for a minute enjoying the smell and admiring her from the inside. Then I turned the key, listened to the fuel pump tick and pulled out the choke. A few cranks of the starter later she sprang to life. I eased the choke in a notch and watched the oil pressure climb. I let her idle for another minute to make sure everything sounded good then I eased her into reverse and backed out of the garage. Once out in the sunlight I got out to check tire pressures and give her one more visual check and found myself standing there admiring her beautiful lines. Back in the drivers seat and out on the road I eased her up to speed and listened to the sound of all her machinery working in unison. Then I realized I was grinning from ear to ear and talking to the car as if she was an old friend. At first I was embarrassed by my actions but then it occurred to me that she really was more than just a machine. We've been together for nearly 25 years now and she has never let me down. Oh sure, we've had our disagreements. Sometimes I'll push her too hard. Sometimes she'll make too much noise. But she's always been there for me and I've always done my best to take care of her. And on a sunny spring day when we're out on the road together, working as a team responding to each other in that unique way I realize what true love really is.

Hi Bill. Your "love afair" with your MG was well written and well put. I couldn't have said it better myself! Thanks for sharing what is, I'm sure a very common sentiment about one's MGA! Cheers! Glenn

Excellent!! Glad you're sending it for publication. It deserves it. (Like the part about chore list being under control. I tell myself that all the time and then get back to MGing.)

Bill, could we use this in our club newsletter? I think the other members of the Kansas City MG Car Club would really like to read it. Amazing how a little time spent with our 'loves' can make things seem so good.

Bill, Wonderful! Just think. Owning an MGA will never require a "mid-life crisis", Viagra or Botox. After 32 years of ownership, your poignant words are the true wisdom of MGA ownership! Well said! Don Tremblay
