MG MGA - Smith's voltmeter
Just fitted a Smiths "classic" voltmeter. Works fine and looks right. However. These gauges are bi-metallic. I have wired it in to the switched side of the ignition so it comes on when the key is turned. Being bi-metallic there is an appreciable delay before it reads full voltage, perhaps about 15-20 seconds. Are the older Smiths gauges moving coil so giving an instant readout. If I have got any of the above theory wrong forgive me, electrics is not my strongest point. Thanks Chris.

Chris, My experience is the same as yours with the same new Smiths "classic" voltmeter. -M.S.

Classic smiths reproductions are generically similar to 1968 and newer Smiths gauges for function so yes, you are basically correct. -BMC.

Chris - Many of the gauges use a bi-metalic or a taught wire movement so there is sufficient damping to keep the gauge from responding to transient voltage spikes. I believe that most, if not all auto voltmeters are like that. Cheers - Dave
