MG MGA - Steering Rack Question

The car is going back together and I've already found areas that I didn't document as well as I should have. I'll try to ask one question at a time. Because the PO had used grease in the steering rack, and allowed the boots to remain in a torn state, I decided that I take it apart and clean it out. Luckily, it looks like the heavy grease cotinued to lubricate and kept most of the dirt and grime out. I have a question, however. The large pinion thrust washer (comes out after the rack) came out before I discovered that it has two grooves in one face. Which way do they face? Toward the steering wheel or toward the front of the car?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Hopefully someone that knows for sure will chime in, but the oil grooves in a thrust washer would usually go toward the rotating surface. In this case I would expect they would go against the pinion gear.

The grooves should always point to a moving surface. Therefore the one nearest the steering wheel should have the grooves on the front face (towards the front). They are there to provide a path for lubricants.
