MG MGA - Steering Wheel

I am in the process of buying a 60/61 MGA. How can you tell the difference between the two? Also the original wheel is there it is terrible condition. Do anyone have an info on how to restore the wheel? The metal is fine but everything else has deteriorated. If any one has info would you please drop me a note. I would like to retore my self if possible.
Thanks

Other than the serial number, hard to tell the difference because there really isn't any difference. Even the SN can be misleading.
As far as the wheel, repair kits are sold that have a black epoxy for reparing cracks. If it's just cracked near the spokes this sometimes works. If the rim is bad you are probably better off getting a replacement.
Cheers, and welcome....

Eastwood has a repair kit. For cracks only. Like GT said, if its more than that ...

Assuming you are talking about manufacturing dates all the 1960 cars were 1600 Mk.1 and, apart from the first few months, all 1961 cars were 1600 Mk.2.

There are quite a few noticeable differences between the two including the recessed front grille (Mk.2), vinyl covered dashboard and top scuttle (Mk.2) and the Mk.2 rear lights are not on the wings.

I wouldn't attempt to repair a standard steering wheel and, as long as funds permit, treat yourself to a new repro. wheel. The one I got was excellent.

Post some pictures here before you buy it and we can better comment................Mike

The epoxy in the Eastwood kit is called PC-7. My local hardware store carries it.

I used JB Weld to repair cracks in my steering wheel, and then had a professional shop repaint it. Looks like new.

George,
I think JB weld is a superior product. I tried the PC-7 stuff and was not happy. Think I will redo with JB weld.
Hey, you planning to do the GT or Koehler Challange or Pittburgh GP? I'm hoping to do them all. Maybe I'll see you at one or all!

On the steering wheel check that the spokes are firmly fixed to the metal in the rim. Its a long time (15 years?) since I repaired mine but by memory there is a ring of metal on the end of the spokes crimped round the rim. This can work loose and all the forces are taken by the plastic which inevitably cracks and any new plastic will crack again unless the joint is tight. I seem to remember brazing mine up.

Someone who has done the repair more recently or who has a better memory can probably give more/better details.

Hi Gerry. I haven't made any plans yet for this summer, I'd like to attend at least one MG event. I have to take the wife somewhere for our 40th (boss' orders), I wonder if she would go to the GT.... :)
