MG MGA - Strange bracket on carb.

I have just fitted new carbs to my Mga 1600 which has a crossflow head i.e.the carbs on on the right of the car. On the old "rear carb" there was a lever looking thing trapped between the carb and the inlet manifold which did not seem to have any function. (note because my carbs are on the right the carb described as "rear" is actually at the front) Its hard to see on the exploded diagrams but I think that it could be item 55 0n page 17 of the Moss catalogue described as AHH5339 BRACKET anchor. Could anyone explain what this is for and is it redundant on my setup?!

3rd redundant throttle return spring(?) Pretty sure. I remember mine getting in the f&%##%g way when getting to the carb-to-manifold bolt.

Mine's now got a funny bend in it.

That part is the anchor bracket for throttle cable return spring. It normally gees on the bottom stud for the rear carburetor, very near to the vacuum port for distributor advance. For your cross flow head, assuming you will use the same carburetors, this would be attached to bottom stud of thw front carburetor (very near to the vacuum port for distributor advance).
