MG MGA - The advantages of growing old..

For the Aussies out there, you maybe interested to know that Shannons Insurance give Racing Cover for cars over 60 year old at no extra charge (see extract from their Public Disclosure Statement below) - a few MGAs in the MGCC Vic might be going a bit faster in next few years!

Crikey Mike - They're game, but when you think about it, I guess they wouldn't get all that many claims really

I guess it is a little bit like our MoT (yearly annual test) exemption that was introduced a year or so ago for pre 1960 vehicles. The statistics people looked at the number of mechanical related accidents involving these old cars, the miles they completed each year and compared with current figures. They came to the conclusion that the figures were so insignificant it just was not worth the time, effort and paperwork to make the exemptions in various parts of the annual test for them. I presume the insurance companies do similar sorts of statistics and have come to the conclusion that you 60+ year old Oz drivers in 60+ year old cars cannot now drive fast enough to catch the others up to have an accident!

I need my car to grow old faster than me ....

I think the insurance companies probably hate the geriatric-racer drivers (previously boy-racer)) like me who still like to drive their MGAs like they stole it! :)

I took my MOT exempt A for it voluntary MOT this week and again had the bizarre experience of having to just talk to the tester for 10 mins after completing the test before he dare submit the result on the on line system as DVLA would think he had skimped the test if it was too quick. In fact he had done the test fine and quite leisurely but there is just not enough to test to satisfy the DVLA system's minimum time.

One of the disadvantages is when you see a thread heading of "Rear end Twitch" you automatically think the U bolts are loose rather than the fairer sex-----

Registratiopn Road Worthy inspections on old cars in Australia in the 40's and 50's --cars that clearly were not up to scratch-- a packet of cigaretts left on the front seat of the car worked wonders with the inspector!!
In time, regulations were strictly enforced.
I presented my TC for a roadworthy, in the 70's --it was in good shape
and fit for the inspection.
The inspector looked under and round it--spun the wire wheels to see if they were true---then lifted the bonnet----
" Hell, you cannot have that --!" Pointing to a genuine Shorrock Super Charger.
No way was he about to pass the car.
I argued--the guy rang his supervisor engineer---I spoke to him too.
He had the nicest Yorkshire accent that I have ever heard.
Yorkshire Police used supercharged TC's after the war.
The chief engineer demanded to see the car--we spent an hour reminissing--a drive--and eventually he got round to signing the roadworthy certificate.
All great fun.

A couple of years ago a Bugatti owner presented his car for his certificate in Melbourne. The confused young tester looks at the car and says ... um, can you show me your right indicator? The driver sticks his right hand out as the correct signal ... um, OK! Pass!
