MG MGA - Thinking of selling my A

Hi All, I've been a mostly silent reader of this BBS for years now. I think you are a pretty awesome group of MG lovers (occasional angst notwithstanding). About 9 years ago i found a 1962 A MKII over in Arizona and bought it. I've pretty much restored it myself and have been driving it about a thousand miles a year since then. A few months ago i decided i might try selling. Not that i "need" to sell it, just moving on to other interests. So the car is dark BRG with tan leather interior and solid teak dash and cockpit rails (Which i crafted myself). It's fitted with a 1800 B 3-mains engine and overall seems quite tight and tidy. I am entertaining all offers but would think 20,000 to 22,000 $US is a fair starting point. I'll respond to all inquiries either in the thread here or in private communication. I'd much rather see the car in the hands of someone already in love with MGs who has an idea of what they are getting into rather than someone who will not appreciate the idiosyncracies of the classic MGA. Happy motoring and safety fast, lads.

Sorry to hear this. I have talked about selling my 1500 roadster several times. I don't get to drive 1000 miles per year anymore either. Each time I mention it, my wife talks me out of it. Depending on the quality of your work, and how well it has held up with your ~9,000 miles you may be understating the value, especially with Spring coming up. Of course, pictures always help to show the car.

Sounds like a nice car. You should post a few pics. I wonder if having a B engine in an A will decrease the value of the car. I'm sure there are others more qualified to answer that question.

Not to alarm you but you might be interested to know that in the March edition of Hemmings Sports & Exotics there is a 58 listed in the Marketplace / Auction Profile. Classified as a #3 (Average Condition) and described as a "real nice driver". Top bid - $10,500. Yikes! Average selling price according to Hemmings was listed at $14,000.

Both numbers seem low to me but maybe its a reflection on how the economy is effecting the classic car market. Good luck!

A nice 59 A just sold today in Kissimmee at the Mecum auction for $26,500! Guess I have to look into incresing my insurance stated value :)

Is the fan on backward?
Jeff Bennett

Jeff.. I,too think the fan is on bass-ackwards.

Whether the fan is on backwards or not depends entirely on which way the engine is turning, no? I know too little about MGB engines to say.

The fan pulls air from the front no mater which way it is installed. The difference is that the smooth side of the blades should be the working side. Consider that the fan is pulling air, so the smooth side of the blades should be towards the engine. MGA engines all turn clockwise when viewed from the front of the car.
Ed Bell

Yes, I believe the fan is on backwards. And some thief has obviously stolen the carbs and replaced it with that horrid downdraft thingie, but otherwise a nice looking car!

Are you sure you want to sell it? You may well miss it once it is gone!
Bill Spohn

It is usually necessary to mount the fan backwards when installing a 1800 engine with longer water pump in an MGA. Otherwise the fan will hit the radiator. Other solutions are using a 1500 pump or machining down the end of the MGB pump.

The fan can be disassembled and re-assembled with the bladed facing the "backwards" direction but it would be a lot of work.
