MG MGA - timong marks

When the number one piston is at the top and the timing marks are on top dead center should the marks on the cam gear and crank gear be close together or far apart. I know they should be in a straight line but should the dots be close together or far apart. I have watched a you tube from Twist that said they should be far apart but the manual I have said they should be close together. Witch way is it?

For initial installation of the sprockets, the marks can be next to each other. But that is TDC on the #1 exhaust stroke. Before installing the distributor you need to turn the crankshaft one turn, which turns the cam 1/2 turn. The mark on the cam sprocket is then far away from the crank sprocket, but the marks are still in line with the shafts. This puts #1 at TDC on the compression stroke. Then you install the distributor drive gear so the rotor will point toward #1 spark plug. The vacuum unit points straight up before setting static the timing.
