MG MGA - Tracing car history - USA Georgia
This got me thinking. My Twin Cam was imported from USA about 2 years ago. I have tried several time to get USA license information, but although I sometimes get read receipts on my emails I never get a response. EEY 445 was it's last known registration for YD3/801 http://freespace.virgin.net/marka.hester/pic2.htm Would any USA members be able to help with contacts. I'd be interested in paying, if I could find out it's original engine number. I have one former owner from NAMGR ?? but he does not reply either. Many Thanks <MARK> |

Mark, Looking up my Twin Cam Register the last name I have is: Charles Burns Cartersville GA USA However, a seach of the online telephone directory shows only seven people named Burns in Cartersville, and Charles is not one of them. Mick |

Thanks Mick, that was they guy I wrote to, but he must have moved. I'm sure as the other posting suggests it's a matter of looking through old paper records, but from the other side of the globe that's impossible.. Anyone know if there's a local MGCC or MGOC in Georgia ? Thanks <MARK> |
Mark Hester |
Hi Mark, The local club is Peachtree MG Registry and I believe their website is www.Peachtreemg.com I will ask around town and see if anyone recalls the car. Who did you import it through? Best, Chris |
Chris Sloan |
Chris, If you could ask that would be much appreciated. I purchased it locally after appearing on eBay. It was imported via http://www.imorex.co.uk/ but I have little USA ownership details. Many Thanks <MARK> |
Mark Hester |
Mark, No problem. I will let you know if I have any luck. I looked at the pics of the car on your site and those registration plates (red on white) were discontinued about 20 years ago, if my memory serves. I take it the car has been off the road for awhile. Chris |
Chris Sloan |
Chris, I contacted Peachtree (Nancy), but it appears they do not keep records of registration numbers which I find odd, she suggested contacting NAMGAR, which I already have. Have you had any further luck or are there any other MG clubs in Georgia? Many Thanks <MARK> |
Mark Hester |
Mark, try the Georgia DMV, they often have records going back several years. Worth a try. I found information for several of our dutch registered cars this way. Good luck ! Koen Struijk MGA Register Holland |
Koen Struijk |
Koen, I believe I have tried them previously, with no luck. Is this the correct web site ? http://www.dmv.org/ga-georgia/department-motor-vehicles.php Would you have a helpful person's email address I could try by any chance. Many Thanks <MARK> |
Mark Hester |
Mark, I notice that the license frame has the name "Bartow" on it. A search on the internet shows that there are four car dealers named Bartow in Georgia. It gives their address and phone numbers. I wonder if they would have any old information on customers??? |
sherlock |
Actually, Bartow is the county in Georgia. The county seat is Cartersville. Their website is www.bartowga.org. |

Hi Mark, I had already spoken with the president of the Peachtree Registry and he had checked the records with no luck, as well. I think he is also asking a few of the members if they recall hearing of this car before. By the way, since our cars' registration numbers tend to change over time (rather than being permanently assigned), there is no reason to be surprised that the Registry did not track such numbers. In the meantime, I have spoken to my mechanic (who has been in this area some time) and he also does not recall Mr. Burns or the car in question. He was also going to mention the name to a couple of other folks, however, so I will keep you posted. |
Chris Sloan |
Many Thanks to you all. I'm sure this will turn up something, it's just a matter of asking the right people. Meanwhile I'm flat out preparing for the Trip to Le Mans next weekend... See other posts. Thanks Again. <MARK> http://freespace.virgin.net/marka.hester/index.htm http://freespace.virgin.net/marka.hester/MGA_Twin_Cam_Home.htm |

I filled in this form http://www.dmvs.ga.gov/contact/Electronically.asp But this looks like drivers license info mostly. There site like most government sites has very little email contact details, which obviously helps when you are not in the same country. I don't suppose someone in Georgia who may read this could phone them and see if such an helpful persons email address could be found. There is obviously a fee (above site mentions $0.50) but this is hard to pay if they won't accept cash via the mail either. Many Thanks <MARK> |

This was their reply <MotorVehicleInquiries@dmvs.ga.gov> Sent : Friday, 10 June 2005 3:22:24 PM To : <markhester@hotmail.com> Subject : FW: Overseas 1958 Vehicle Registration Dear Sir: Since the State of Georgia has a privacy act on tag and title information, I will not be able to release this information to you through email. Please go to the following link on our web site: http://www.dmvs.ga.gov/motor/dealers/whotagttlinfo.asp for procedures on who can obtain this information and how. Thank you, ********** Only problem with this is they ask for USA licensing and vehicle registration forms to be provided, which I obviously only have UK ones. Chris any news ? Anyone else have any suggestions on tracing my Twin Cam? Many Thanks <MARK> |
Mark Hester |
Mark, You can purchase a CarFax history of the vehicle for US $19.99. It should give you a fairly detailed ownership / vehicle history report, but will not give you the names of the previous owners (that pesky privacy thing again). It lists the states in which the car was registered and when. I have used it for purchasing used cars and have been pleased with the report. However I have never tried to research a car as old as an MGA. That may or may not be problematic for CarFax. I'd risk the twenty bucks and try it. You can order a report online at www.carfax.com Frank |

I tried that www.carfax.com But I can't get past the 17 digit VIN number, as I only have 6 digits... Emailed DMV again. They quote regulations, I ask real questions... Government Departments... Hummm... |

Carfax is not the panacea that a lot of folks think it is. It is, as you noticed, useless on vehicles made before the 17 digit VIN came into being in the '70s. It will not detect a wreck on a car that was not reported to the police, and it won't ALL of those that are reported. It WILL catch salvage or "non-highway" titles, but may or may not catch all cars that have been flooded if they were not "salvaged". Not all states in the USA require a car to have a salvage title issued IF the owner retains the car and no salvage title is issued. |

Chris, Did any of your contacts come up with anything. I sent off the forms to Georgia DMV, but they say they only go back 5 years. Thanks <MARK> http://freespace.virgin.net/marka.hester/pic2.htm |
Mark Hester |
Mark, So far, nothing I am afraid. I've asked my mechanic and another fellow I know who frequently sells cars from the US to the EU and UK, but no luck so far. Don't give up, yet! Chris |

Further fishing thought the brief paperwork I have I found a small piece of paper: Department of revenue registration tag and tax receipt. Vintage Wholesale Auto 78 Cedar Circle Remlap AL (Alabama) 35133 Dated 05/07/02 So I'm guessing these were either the last people to own my MGA, or a dealer who exported it. I have not managed to find their email address on the web as yet.... I take it Remlap Alabama is some way from Georgia? Thanks <MARK> |
Mark Hester |
Mark Remlap, Alabama is a small town just NE of Birmingham, Alabama or close to 100 miles west of Atlanta. In reality only 60-70 miles from Georgia. Pull up www.mapquest.com for that location. When checking the phone number for the address you gave, it comes up listed for Danny Rollins (sp) (205) 683-0792. Perhaps he operates a small business at home using Vintage Auto as the business name. I'll call him today for you if you want. Joe |
Joseph Wiley |
Joe, That would be much appreciated if you could. If he is the chap, please ask if he has an email address. Many Thanks <MARK> |
Mark Hester |
Mark I called Danny Rollins and he said he knew nothing about "foriegn-y" cars and had nothing to offer. I then made a few calls to the Chamber of Commerce locations near Remlap. One of them came up with the name Richard Weaver for the business, Vintage Wholesale Auto. I called him at 205-680-0040 to get the same reaction. This area of Alabama (Remlap) is very "back woods" and the people are hard to get answers out of. Evidently the note you found is quite old and I've struck out for now. I'll keep looking for you. Jespeph, Many Many thanks for your help so far and to all those above. This is the document I took those details from. http://freespace.virgin.net/marka.hester/YD3_801_USA_Doc.jpg Which also mentions Donny B. Ray Could this be the owner, or the person at Vintage Wholesale Auto Many Thanks again. <MARK> |
Mark Hester |
Anyone else out there near Remlap Alabama who may have heard of or remember these guys "Vintage Wholesale Auto" ? Thanks <MARK> |

Well I invested 6 USD with motorVehicleInquiries@dmvs.ga.gov and came back with nothing... Oh well...I think they only go back 5 years though. I found this site in the UK, although my cars in not on there either, yet my other car (ex USA 73 911) is... strange. Those in UK may find it useful. DVLA Online Licensing. http://www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/application;JSESSIONID_EvlPortalApp=CoNUKMx5Q7G0e3BWqVYlLJoB3mSAjz8BkW5vPfuL56pzEXv2MYMb!-2015015449!966813743?origin=vehicleDetails_en.jsp&event=bea.portal.framework.internal.portlet.event&pageid=Vehicle+Enquiry&portletid=VehicleEnquiry&portletns=VehicleEnquiry_en&wfevent=link.enquiry Has anyone in the US found a similar site, or are they all pay-as-you-go ? I'm doing better finding other peoples Twin Cams than mine.... http://freespace.virgin.net/marka.hester/xx01_Twin_Cams.htm Thanks <MARK> |
