MG MGA - Transmission Whine
Anyone have a thought - mine has developed a whine on the overrun, not loud but definitely not there in the past. Difficult to tell whilst driving if it’s from the back axle or gearbox. However, if I knock it out of gear on the overrun the whine disappears - would that remove suspicion from the back axle or is it just because it then has no load from motoring the engine on the overrun? Is there some clever method to “listen” to the whine more accurately to isolate it?

Does it do it in more than one gear?

Good thought Dave! Haven’t tried that test. Will do shortly when current smaller jobs finished. Thanks.

Remove the battery cover before going for a drive. You will hear a lot more...

An update. Helped by advice from Barney, as always, just finished the job - found the drive flange retaining nut loose so probably not correctly meshing the pinion gear to the differential. To be sure, replaced the pinion outer taper roller bearing and oil seal, adjusted the pinion shims to give correct mesh and preload, new oil, and tightened up. Running nicely now.
