MG MGA - Turn Signals

My front turn signals no longer flash and I don't get the indicator light on the dash to flash. It seems that the trouble is with a box that bolts to the firewall in the engine compartment that controls the relays. Can it be taken apart and repaired or should I try and get a replacement? If repairable any hints would be great!

Since you talk about a box on the firewall, I assume you have a 1500, is that correct? Do the front turn signals come on solid, or do they not come on at all? What about the rear lights? Barney Gaylord has a good page about troubleshooting the turn signal relay. http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/electric/et105.htm

Mike: I had constant trouble with my relay, it is orginal to the car. I got soooo tired of fooling with it that I cut off the internal relays and replaced them with solid state relays. Has work without fault for 4 years, 10,000 miles. Looks perfectly stock on the outside. good luck, Bill

Do you have any pictures, diagrams, schematics, part lists? Your solution sounds like something I would like to pursue.

Thanks

Were's a $10 solution for replacement relays: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/electric/ts202.htm

I had a similar problem; the turn signal relay was no longer reliable. The price of a new one is shocking!. Being a cheap b----r, I built up a replacement unit in a small electronics enclosure, using two relays from Radio Shack. The wiring and principle is the same as Barney Gaylord's, except his wiring is much neater than mine. I'd follow his instructions if I had to do it over again!

Obviously I haven't read all of your site before. Thanks for the direction, and for the content.
