MG MGA - Twin Cam louvered panels

In the recent thread related to "plastic radiator fan", Colyn Firth posted that he had twin cam louvered panels on his car (inner fenders), and that they helped in keeping the car running cool. I'm interested in this, as I have a coupe, is this a straight forward modification to make? Are the TC louvered panels available?

Thanks, George

I believe you can get the louvred twin cam style inner fender panels from Bob West Classic Cars here in Yorkshire in the UK. If not, Im sure they will tell you where you can get them.

I think they are pre-shaped to fit the inner wing(fender) and you just have to cut out a section of it to suit. Mine are fixed by 3 dzus type quick release fasteners.

The cut outs on my inner fenders were quite crudely done with lots of ragged edges. I intended to grind the egdes smooth but it would have ruined the paint and so I cheated and fitted a thin rubber type of edging strip to cover it up. I
This has worked well and has also prevents it from vibrating.

George,
I would say a lot of effort for little gain.
Hot air rises afterall.
Plus as a twin cam owner one of mine rubs on one tire on full lock...
There were some on ebay when I last looked. Usually about 35 quid a side.
Wrapping the exhaust header in that tape stuff would make more of a difference.... cooling wise.
MGA's are particularly good at trapping hot air around the heater area and with a single skin bulkhead that adds up to uncomfortable occupants.

George,

As Mark says, it's a lot of work for little gain. We've done it and it's on the website at:

In the US, you can get the panels from Jim Alcorn at

I'd recommend some good insultation on the tunnel and firewall. We've used Dynamat-type stuff and Lizard Skin spray.

Of course, a louvered bonnet helps and looks cool, but your painter will hate you and you won't like waxing it!
