MG MGA - Two Questions

1)I got stuck driving in the rain on Friday and noticed that my ankles occassionally got a tiny bit of spray. Looked under and saw that where the pedals come together there is an opening into the engine bay through the firewall. I'm wondering if there is supposed to be a rubber piece there to prevent water and heat from getting into the cockpit.

2)was going to test the heater shutoff valve and discovered a type of hose clamp that I've not seen before. Where the clamp comes together it interlocks and a heavy cotter pin is inserted to lock it together. Is its removal a simple matter of pulling out the cotter? Is there a specialized tool for reinstalling it.

Thanks
Tysen

Do you mean http://mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=29230 item 29?
John DeWolf

Thanks John that would appear to be it. I'll check tonight.

I believe the cotter pin is twisted to tighten the band ? type hose clamp. Not the correct tpye so either get proper tpye or modern one.

Actually, that is the correct type of clamp for the heater-end of the large air duct (assuming Tysen is referring to the air-flow shutoff valve, not the water shutoff valve). I don't think those clamps re-use very well, but you can try. Otherwise, you can obtain a replacement clamp of that type from Todd Clarke at Clarke Spares and Restorations.

M D is correct I assumed you meant water control valve.

Actually I did mean the water hose that connects the water shut off valve to the heater core.

There is this inter-locking cotter pin hose clamp. Never seen one before I can't figure out how they tension it to insert the cotter.
Tysen

Is it a slotted cotter pin, where the band goes trough the slotted cotter and the cotter is twisted to tighten it? If so, you should be able to twist the cotter pin with pliers or vice grips to loosen. In any event, you should replace this clamp with either a modern band clamp or an old-style wire clamp, as Randy suggested.

MD,

Nope its a ring with two interlocking parts that a cotter pin goes between to keep from popping apart.

I'll just make sure to have replacements on hand if it doesn't go back on.

Thanks
