MG MGA - What do the letters on an engine number mean?

I've got an MGA that is titled as a 1959 -- but the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust lists it as a 1957. Somewhere along the line the engine was swapped out -- and the current engine is BP15GB9498. What do all the numbers represent, and is there any way to track the origin of the engine?

BP15GB-Pre June 1957 engine for MGA

Hi R.E.
Here is a sample engine number:
15GB/U/H1016

15 = 1500 cc engine
G = MG
U = central gear change
H = high compression engine
1016 = engine serial number

Note: 16GA prefix would indicate a 1600 cc engine

Hope this helps, Glenn
