MG MGA - Wipers with a mind of their own
I finally got my 56 roadster out of winter storage and took it out for a stretch yesterday afternnon. Three times while driving, the wipers decided to spontaneously turn on. Twice they did 1/2 a cycle and stopped. I had to turn the switch on then off to get them to go back to their 'parked' position. The other time, they turned on and did 4 or 5 cycles before stopping. Any ideas on where to start toubleshooting would be appreciated.

Check the connections at the motor and then at the switch.

The switch supplies a ground for the motor when on, so any bare spot in the wire making contact with the body or chassis would effectively turn the wipers on. Check for any worn areas in the wiring to the motor or switch.

Since on one occasion you had it run 1/2 cycle and then stop, I would suggest looking into the parking contacts or hte internal wiring in the wiper gearbox. No other external fault would allow it to stop at 1/2 cycle. Chuck

Thanks for the replies. I'll check the wiring between the switch and wiper motor for wear first since that should be easy enough to do. If that doesn't turn up anything, I'll probe into the parking contacts, etc. Based on Chucks comment, I'm suspecting that's were the problem is.
