MG MGA - wire wheel run-out

Help!!! Again I find myself in need of some expert info... I have in my possesion five 60 spoke painted wire wheels for my 58 mga. I have measured run-out and they all fall into .042-.057 range.. What I need to know is this an acceptable run-out? I was once told that anything less than 1/8th (.125) was acceptable. But, 1/16th(.062) or less was ideal. Is this true?? Thanks

Mike,
Barney Gaylord's site says that anything more than 1/8" runout measured at the outside of the rim can be a problem, so your range of of .042 to .057 would be acceptable. Be sure to get a tire installer that knows the proper way to balance wire wheels- it is done differently than solid wheels.
good luck

Runout sounds great, remember to check runout at the bead area not the edge of the rim. I've seen rim edges slightly bent while the bead area is still true.

How is the balancing of a wire wheel different than that of a disk wheel?

It has to do with how the machine secures the wheel. Check Barney Gaylords site under wire wheels as he explains it there. I couldn't find anyone who could gurantee that they could balance my wire wheels on their machines. I found someone with an old bubble balancer and it worked great, 80mph and no appreciable shimmy.

Hi My wires are fairly new and they have run out, they must be mounted on a balancer on the internal bevel and the outer edge where the spinner grips the wheel,( I converted an old spinner to do this), the inner face of the wheel mustn't touch the hub of the balancer, a spacer needs to be made. After trying several settings on the balancer without achieving a perfect balance, I balanced them staticly i.e equalising the heavy spot with one stick-on weight stuck to the middle of the rim behind the spokes. This seems to work, no shake at all. It seems that run out doesn't affect the wheel wobble felt through the steering wheel
