MG MGA - wire wheels

Has anyone shopped around for wire wheels lately? I guess British wire wheel is out of business and they were supposed to be the best.

Dayton, Dunlop...the archives go both ways. Racemettle alum wheels look great but being in the UK, way too expensive.

Hate to hear that about BWW.
The Roadster Factory has regular sales of Daytons at the best prices going. Same wheel as TR2-3 for 48 spoke 15x4. Tr3A/B are 60 spoke 15x4.5.

Not your side of the Pond but for information. Last year I bought a set of Dunlop Chrome Wires 60 spoke 15 complete with Vredenstein 155 Tyres from S C Parts here in the UK They are Tubeless after 3000 miles including a grueling Scottish tour they seem excellent. Cost around £850 including fitting delivery balance etc for the 4

I have Dayton 60 spoke chrome wires - seem very good.

Thanks all, great info. I heard BWW would sell wheels with tires and balancing. There is no one around here that can balance WWs.

I was running 15 x 6 70-72 spokes with 205 tires but they're a bit too big. I'd 15 x 5.5 60-spoke and i think 195s. I hear TR6 rims fit but with 1/2" less backset, does that really matter?

Dunlop 15.5 x 5 1/2 72 spoke are only $319 at Moss..pretty tempting.

Roadster factory shows TR6 wheels at 15 x 6, Moss lists them as 15 x 5.5???

FWIW. My understanding of the difference of wire wheels is that the Dayton wheels are made from a casting and machined to shape where as the Dunlop are made from a metal pressing machine. The machined wheels hold there trueness longer. Also, I have drum brakes all around and when I ordered from Dayton they advised that with the drum brakes I required the offset. So apparently there are differences in wire wheels for the MGA depending on your brake configuration. Delivery took a lot longer than anticipated but that's another story.

I you can't get WW balanced locally, you are in for big expenses whenever a spoke breaks.

Fred,
XKs Unlimited, a Jag based supplier has a wheel/tire division for a variety of car. Click link for the MG page:

I believe you can have them mount and balance a set. I just ordered a set of Vredesteins for my XKE and they turned out well.

Wire wheel source = great

They don't have 15x5-1/2 but 15x6 triumph wheels are only $257 ea.

I can get 15x186/? vredesteins mounted and balanced.

Someday, I WILL have the Dunlop D-type alloys. They look like twincam wheels and I bet they're lighter than wires. Of course they're $691 + splines. Maybe on my next MGA sitting and waiting to be redone.

I bought a set of Dayton 60 spoke wheels about 2 years ago. They were packaged well, totaly true round when checked ( no spoke looseness whatsover then or since ), They were well made and I have had no problems with them whatsover. I followed Daytons recomendation and spray them with WD40 to get lanonin protection after cleaning. A lovely product both in terms of qualityand looks
..more expensive than the alternatives but I did read some horror stories about the quality control of the latter during my research. I recommend fully.

Lmazoway--you were able to order direct from Dayton?
