MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - 3.1 v6 & MGB O/D

Hi Folks,

Has anyone had experience with a Chevrolet 60 degree v6 engine mated to a MGB O/D trans. I have a stock MGb 1800 engine and O/D trans. I was wondering if there was a possibility of using a plate similar to what the MG factory used to mate the MG engine to the stock trans. If I could have a plate made/cut I would be able to still use my MGB O/D trans which is brand new. If anyone has tried this combination could you please let me know what worked or the reason it didn't ?

Thanks Alan

The tranny will be your weak link. You will tear it up. Why not sell the stock tranny w/overdrive and buy a T-5. You will be better off and probably have money left over. I am finishing up a GM 2.8 with a t-5 and an s-10 rearend. If you do look for a t-5 try to find a v-8 with .63 fifth gear so you can keep your stock 3.9 rearend. It is plenty strong.
Good luck

Alan,
The factory used a variation of the stock gearbox. Early aftermarket V8 BOP/R conversions had plates for this as well. Guess what? The gearboxes didnt last. Your new gearbox will soon be blown out if you plan to use any power out of the conversion over what the stock 1.8L has to offer.
The cost of a kit like that would end up costing more to build then if you just purchase a T5. Its not as fun sometimes to place a car in 5th gear as it is to "switch" the car into overdrive, but the T5 gear ratios are better anyways. As stated by Garret,
"If you do look for a t-5 try to find a v-8 with .63 fifth gear..."
The V8 gearbox has a 1st gear of 2.98. Therefore, a "close" ratio gearset compared to the stock MG B gearbox. The overdrive is an even bigger deal. The MG B overdrive, if installed, is an 0.82 to 1
The V6 Camaro box is 0.72 to 1
and the V8 box is 0.68(or 0.63) to 1
With the added power and Tq, you NEED this much more overdrive.

Alan, I'm sure that someone in your local club must know of someone with a V6/V8 conversion. See if you can catch a ride, and talk to the owner about there gearing.

Good luck,
-Brian Mc Cullough.
