MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Another Tranny Option
Hi, I am new to this board. I have a 260 Ford V8 for my project with a SROD tranny. They are basically an aluminum Ford toploader with overdrive and an enclosed shifter. They were used by Ford from 79-83 behind the 250 I6 and 255 and 302 V8. The ratio spread is a little wide, like a 3 speed with overdrive. 1ST:3.07 2ND:1.72 3RD:1.00 & 4TH:.70 Overdrive. To me it is perfect, good first and overdrive makes the 3.91 a 2.74. You don't have to shift as often as a T5. The strength is about the same as a T5 and with the heater removed and engine set back the shifter comes up in the stock hole. I cut the shifter down for a shorter throw and you can turn it around to slant towards the front or rear. The MGB boot and ring fit like they were made for it. I got mine off EBAY for $100 and they are common in wrecking yards from $200-$300. |

This transmission was in grocery getter cars so it was geared for economy not performance. Generally 2.75 or 3.00 rear end gears. With the wide ratio spread it was not quick. With 3.73-4.10 (3.91 MGB) it does just fine. Look for it in 79-82 Ford Granada,Fairmont and Mercury Monarch,Zephyr. |
