MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Axle ratio for autobox
Disablements of both my self and my wife (my left leg and her right arm) means that my MGB V8 conversion will have an autobox. Everybody tries to use 3.07 or similar rear axle ratio with a manual gearbox. Would this be the same if using an auto box or should I be looking for something different ? Thanks. |

The ratio choice is the same for autoboxes as it is for manuals. If you want it quick, go for a numerically higher ratio; numerically lower for low RPM cruising. It also depends on whether your autobox has overdrive and/or a lockup torque converter. |

Paul, it all depends on the final drive ratio of the trans. If it's 1/1 then you'll have to have a 3.07/8 diff. If it's 0.8/1 or thereabouts, you could use the original diff. Also the steering might be a little on the heavy side for your wife. I suggest you use the steering rack from RB model. This would be a great help. Otherwise PAS might be neccessary. Barrie E |

Paul, George has it right on. Also take into consideration what your HP/Torque curves, and tire sizes are. Each combo is a bit different. |

Thanks for the imput. I own 9 cars (/ 7 bikes) and the MGB is just for fun until I get my Volvo P1800 (Jensen version) restored. We have "everyday" cars but my wife is getting fed up of me buying things that she cann't drive (she only has 20% use in her arm and now needs PAS & autobox to drive safely) ! My MG already has a recon engine but I've always fancied a V8. My car is a 1979 RB so is easier to convert than earlier cars but I'm still debating what rear axle to use. I though a narrowed Sd1 was the way to go but peoples experienced with resplined half shafts makes me conserned with their reliability and I probably will opt for a new crown wheel & pinion to go into the original axle casing. Power steering is something needed but to sort out after the engine is fitetd and available space known. It already is running on 185/70/14 tyres and the steering is heavier than a scrap car I have just cut up with 165 section tyres. |
