MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - ford t5 fyi

I just thought I would pass this info along if anyone else is looking for a ford t5. I have confirmed that the 99+ mustangs with a v6 were equipped with a t5 that has the longer input shaft like the 94-95 mustang gt. These v6 cars have the "good" internals just like the last of the 5.0 cars, i.e. 300 ft/lb torque rating and also have the 3.35 first gear and .68 overdrive, and has the all-steel input bearing retainer.

Here's the catch: they have no provision for a cable speedometer, only an electronic pulse connection. So you can either use an electronic aftermarket speemeter or you can swap in an older tailshaft housing if you want the cable speedometer.

As for the longer input shaft, you can use a 94-95 5.0 bellhousing with no modifications, or you could install the shorter input shaft for $130 in parts. I just bought a low mileage 2000 transmission from a yard in Omaha for $250, which is about 1/2 what people seem to want for a 86-95 v8 t5 that has probably been abused. And there are tons of these transmissions in salvage yards. Check out car-part.com for one near you. I'm always looking for the cheaper alternative so this excited me.

That is great info Ryan. I presume the same would apply to T-5's from '95 onwards for the V6 powered cars? The longer input shaft and bellhousing seemed to be part of the switch to the SN-95 body perhaps? I have a '95 T-5 from a V8 car and this still has a rear extension which will accomodate a mechanical speedo drive so that the D&D mechanical connexion still fits right into the housing replacing the impulse generator. Perhaps the later impulse generators were quite different in the manner of fitting to the gearbox? Bob Elwin.

Bob,

You're right, the '94-'98 v6 transmission will work also, and it does have the cable speedometer provision. However, they are not rated for as much torque as the '99+ units. The impulse generator on the '99+ t5 is actually inside the tailhousing and there's just an electrical connection on the outside of the tailhousing.
