MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Transmissions

I am currently in the collection stage of my 1975 MGB - Rover 3.5lt conversion. The next part I am looking for is a transmission. I understand that the T5 5 speed tranny is the one to get. Does any one have numbers and/or car and years number of the transmissions that are best suited for the conversion.
The information I currently have is the tranny should be out of a:
87-92 Camero
87-91 Firebird
92 Firebird/Trans AM
What about transmissions for the mid nineties?
Also the local GM dealer said it should have code on it DKA or DKH or DKL or DKX and it is a MK6. I guess what Borg Warner calls a T5???

Bruce:

You are correct in your assumptions. Stick with 89 or newer GM stuff. It was posted earlier by (I believe) Arthur that GM may have stopped diferentiating between the v8 and v6 trannies after they dropped the 60 degree v6. I do not know what this did to the internal ratios, probably all the same now?

As for the earlier trannies, you want a V8 model with the .63 overdrive. I now quote from "The V8 Newsletter": "First step is to check the casting numbers on the gearcase. The GM model number for the t5 is 1352 which is included in the number cast into the case......The .63 trannies carry a B-W part #1352-213 and GM part# 1019-2298. For the .73 O the numbers are 1352-212 and 1019-2297".

The taller overdrive will allow you to keep the MG rear end and save much $$$$. while still giving good highway rpm. The v6 trannies will all have the .73 overdrive. They are more common. Other than the overdrive and internal ratios, I do not know if the v6 trannies are any weaker than the v8 ones.

You will need to source a early GM 215 4 speed bellhousing (NOT A 3 SPEED) and these are getting rare. Try D&D fabrications in Michigan. Good luck.

Thanks for the information I have just recently sent a letter off to D&D fabrications requesting thier catalogue, but the information about the bell housing is good to know.
I have one more quick question you said "Stick with 89 or newer GM stuff" Do you know if this includes 1995, 96, 97 etc???
Bruce Mills

No I don't know of any specific cut-oof dates. It was suggested that when the 60 degree v6 was dropped (1995?) gm made the same tranny for the 6 and 8. As my budget does not strech to such late model bits I have not done much reserch into the later stuff. I figure if it looks the same outside and the ratios are there, use it!
