MG MGB Technical - 250,000 MGB Special

Currently own a 71 mgb roadster, OD, wire wheels. It is a USA model built 5/71 and it has a 250,000
MGB SPECIAL plaque on each front wing. Is this a special model, or did all 1971's come with these?

I don't remember ever seeing these before. I do know that the actual 250,000th unit was produced that year, and was given as a prize in a US MG contest. It was a GT, and was won by a lucky bastard in Texas.

Has anyone out there seen this emblem before? Know anything about it? Thanks in advance
for your help.

Can't say if your's is special but 71's do not have such plaques. Later cars have milestone plaques but I don't know about yours

It may have a dealer-fitted plaque and may have come with some extras as standard as a local sales ploy, but it was nothing to do with the factory according to Clausager. The 'specials' plaques he mentions were on the dash.

Is your VIN GHN5UB250000G by chance? Perhaps a PO had the plaques custom made and installed, to replace the dreaded BL flushing toilet symbol fitted on the wings.

The 250,000th MGB was a US-spec GT that was given away in a contest as a promotional stunt. Technically the 250,000th should have VIN 250,101, since the very first MGB was 101. That doesn't take into account the fact that not all numbers were used. Sometimes, between model years, they would round up to the next convenient number.

I believe that some cars were sold as limited edition models commemorating the production milestone of 250,000 cars. Probably, in keeping with MG practices of the time, the options, including the dash plaque, were installed by the dealer and no record was kept at the factory.

Thanks everyone,

I've also spoken with another '71 B owner that has the same emblem, and also the same questions.

I'm not clear on whether images can be posted here, so I'll send along a couple of pictures to those that responded.

Not having the systery solved in no way diminishes my ride.... it's a daily
driver that's (so far) been a lot of fun.... thanks again.
