MG MGB Technical - 68 MGB Clutch Master Cylinder Leaking

It seems every time I want to take my 68 MGB out for a ride I have to fill the clutch master cylinder resevoir because it has leaked all over the floor board. I looked at the plunger rod with the clutch engaged and I can see a small amount of fluid leaking around the plunger shaft.

Is the entire master cylinder available? Is it practical to rebuild?

You can definitly get rebuilt units for cheap, and send in your old one as a core. This may be the most practical way to go. As far as rebuilding them yourself, I tried my brake MC and failed, but that may have been more of a patience issue (punching out small roll pins and using snap ring pliers drive me nuts, but I have big clumbsy hands). I also believe new units are available, check the usual sources, Moss, Proper MG, Victoria British, Brit-tek.

I think the factor that influences our success with rebuilding any of these cylinders is how far out of round they have become due to wear. To simply hone them out for a new surface can help restore the surface finish, but I doubt it does anything for any misshapened bore. My own experiences with rebuilding are that they never last as long as new unless the unit has been bored and/or sleeved to a new trueness of shape.

In short, I have gotten more money's worth and less aggravation out of either a professionally rebuilt or new hydraulic cylinder for any purpose than any I have rebuilt myself over the last 35 yrs. FWIW.
