MG MGB Technical - A-arm assembly to locate rear axle?

MGOC sells an A-frame assembly that purports to both control axle tramp and sideways movement ... kinda like having both traction bars and a Panhard rod ... it looks extremely simple though there isn't a photo of it in situ. This seems like a swell solution that doesn't have any of the ground clearance issues that traction bars may have or complexity of setting up a Panhard rod and finding room for it given a rear sway bar. There is a lot of spring chatter on the car, both on hard accel and braking, and that needs to be addressed. Has anyone tried this A-frame assembly (this would be on a roadgoing V8)? Better to go the traditional route of traction bars?

Leland, I checked and I couldn't find it. I did however find a bunch of stuff from John Bourke reminding us how crucial it is to have an axle-locating system that doesn't bind up. He says that you need to allow for the rearward motion of each side of the axle, as the leaf spring squishes down ... which makes sense to me. The hard-mounted A-arm would seem to fail this test hands down. Also there is a bunch of jibberish in the archives about roll centers, etc., that's certainly lost on me. I guess the tried and true thing to do is to get a set of anti-tramp arms fixed and have the floor reinforced a bit to deal with it.

I run with about 300bhp with just anti tramp bars no roll bar or panhard rod, koni's on soft but with low CG, I'm looking to 350bhp with a little help.

There are various reasons for this and maybe a new product that may interest you.

Perhaps a more detailed spec may help as lots of variables.

The A arms have caught my eye in the past but Frontline have developed a piece of kit, available for midget, and should be available for B. I hope to see this for myself later this month.

On ground clearance I run 13ins from wheel centre to bottom chrome strip with anti tramp bars.

Glenn Towery on the V8 board talked about having developed a A-Arm system for his cars. I think he used the arms off of a TR7, but not realy sure. He is in NJ, don't have a phone number, try e-mail mgv8glen@bellatlantic.net
