MG MGB Technical - backfire in traffic
I have a 78 BGT RB the engine was replaced with a remanufactured unit recently and have done 1000 miles on the new engine. Living in London I get stuck in alot of traffic no surprises there. The problem is that if I get caught in really slow or stationary traffic for long periods the car starts to pop and run very rough. When I finally get going again the car appears to backfire but the noise doesn't come from the exhaust (atleast the sound does not seem to come from the back and is not very loud) rather the noise seems to be coming from the carbs or around that area. My question is what might be happening to make this happen and could anything be done to prevent it. There is a hell of alot of traffic here in London! so its a real problem. Carbs are fitted with K&N pancakes. |

Look at your needles. Worn needles in the carbies will cause a rich condition just off idle that will cause stumbling and rough running in extended traffic conditions. BTDT! |

CHeck the fuel mixture carefully - if it is running rich you will have bore wash and may invalidate the guarantee on the engine. |
