MG MGB Technical - Conversion To tandem master cylinder
has anyone converted a 63-67 mgb from a single to a tandem brake master cylinder provided in the 68-74? Am just starting some investigation on this. I understand the basic setup is about the same, need new stop light switch and will have to purchase a pressure failure switch and body? a local MG guru stated that I should go with the dual line master cylinder for the 76 and later as this would eliminate the need for the separate pressure failure switch and body. Any thoughts? (e.g. run as fast as you can from this conversion) |

You really shouldn't need the pressure switch, unless you already have have a good used one. I have never actually heard of one working correctly anyway. Since both sides of the system operate at equal pressure, two Tees would work just as well. You will of course have to run new hard lines. All MkI B's that I've seen raced in sanctioned events have had this conversion, AFAIK the SCCA requires it. Get the MC cover from a MkII car, it will have the tapped boss for the switch. You will have to run new wires to the switch from the ends of the original ones in your harness. The later MC's had a booster applied and will foul your air filters, I'd use the MkII unit, it's also much less costly. |

Edward. One of our club members, Bill Myers, has installed the late model system, with servo, on his 67 Mark I. He did have to use a strange air filter to make the system work properly. However, several people have mentioned in the past the use of cone shaped K&N filters when converting an RB car to twin SUs. This might be a better conversion than Bill's use of an Edelbrock (sp) filter covering both of the carbs at the same time. So, the basic answer is, yes, it can be done and the two people I know who have done it liked it. Les |
