MG MGB Technical - converting twin 6 volt batterys to single 12 volt

I remember seeing that someone had tracked down a 12 volt battery for a mgb roadster one the size of a single 6 volt so that it fits into one of the holes. and wondered if anyone can tell me what the battery number is again so I can go get one?
Thanks in advance, Rob.

A year or two ago, someone suggested an HB004 from Halfords. Check archives. Good luck

The one I have used for decades, (not the same battery) is made for some European vehicles and VW Combis. There is a protrusion (lug) at the base of this battery for securing it, which I carefully hacksaw off. That way all four sides are smooth at the base. It fits in one battery carrier very 'snugly' but is not difficult to remove.

Rob-
Buy a Group 25 battery. It'll drop right in. Brand? Interstate. Available anywhere, anytime. No warranty problems, either. Not the cheapest, but a great piece of hardware. I won't use anything else.

Rob,
Think I concur with Steve. Interstates seem to fit, and are found almost anywhere.
I think there is also a Group 26 Sears DieHard that fits, too. But you need to check the small wings at the base of the battery, and make sure they will fit. One year, the DieHard would not fit, and another year, it did - they changed the design slightly. Also, the DieHard comes in a 26R (I think that's correct), that has the terminals in a different configuration. Make sure the positive and negative terminals are aligned so that you won't need any additional cables.
At any rate, note the terminal lineup and take a tape measure with you, and you should be fine.

I don't think that the "group" categories are used in the UK, so saying a Group 26 battery will fit doesn't help.

That said, the UK and Europe must have some similar nomenclature to identify battery dimensions, for the same reasons that we have the group categories here; to make interchanging battery brands possible. Does anyone know what that system is?

Interstate Group 26. Drops right in.

Rob-
Pardon me. That was typographical error. The correct battery is a group 26, just as Victor said.

It was I who suggested using a Halfords 004. the thread was written about Spet. last year...2001

The "group" numbers are supposed to be industry standard (at least in the US...) and are properly referred to as "BCI Groups". I have no idea what BCI stands for, but I just did a search and found this chart -- lists the BCI groups and dimensions for them:

Ok, here we go. BCI stands for "Battery Council International."
