MG MGB Technical - Dismantling Gearbox

I have a gear box I want to disassemble. I didnt get very far yesterday. To get the rear extension off the book says to remove the flange, remove the the tower and take out the selector interlock arm, remove the nuts and then you should be able to withdraw the rear extension. Well, I did all this and the extension is "loose". I can get it maybe a 1/4 inch gap but it wont pull off. Am I missing something? Is there a tecnique I'm missing? The manual makes it sound like it should just pull off at this point. This is the all synchromesh Trans

Thanks

Dennis,

I have only two words of advice......"Chris Betson".

In spite of my efforts to drive him coocoobats, Chris has taken me from a box of mystery parts to a fully assembled transmission/overdrive. It's taken him several months of hard work explaining (many times twice - sometimes 3 times) about assembling tricky transmission components.

I can't say enough about his knowledge or his ability to prode, coerce, and drag the unknowing to success. I recommend him very highly if you need practical & effective help with your situation.

His web site is http://www.octarine-services.co.uk/

Make sure you removed the speedometer drive gear. A little tugging is required.

A block of wood and a BFH and it popped off after a couple of wacks. I was reluctent to hit it that hard at first. Now.... Getting the third motion shaft out. Its tight! I couldn't pull it free last night. I'm thinking today when I get back out in the garage of clamping the shaft into the vice and tapping the case off. Anyone come up with any techniques for getting the shafts out?

Thanks
Dennis

Dennis, what you are thinking will work but be very carefull not to damage the case and used copper vise jaws. The best way is to remove every thing else including the input shaft. You can then set the case in a press and push the shaft and bearing out from the front with the press.
